mock-meat at convenience stores?

Submitted by Hiroko on Tuesday, 8 December 2009No Comment

As soon as it starts getting chilly in Japan, convenience stores come out with their original “oden”, a traditional food here where egg, processed fish, vegetables, etc are plopped and stewed in a clear soup.
So as usual, when I dropped by Lawson I saw it there but also noticed something on the menu that said: “meat-less”

To my surprise, apparently Lawson has partnered with the Meatless brand and have created a few veg-meat products.

But don’t be fooled!
They indicate that it stills contains soy and meat. Plus, the soup is made from bonito, chicken and beef stock.
Another attempt by Japanese to reduce calories for the concerned young women and the Metabolic men, and was clearly not for the veggies out there.

The meatless rolled cabbage is 110 yen, and only 29 calories.
